Instructions
- Prepare the Beef Filling:ย Begin by heating a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it is browned and no longer pink. Drain off any excess grease.
- Sautรฉ Aromatics:ย Add the diced onion to the skillet with the cooked beef and sautรฉ for about 5 minutes, or until the onion becomes softened and translucent. Next, add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
- Season the Beef Mixture:ย Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, and dried oregano into the beef and onion mixture. Season generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Mix everything well to ensure the spices are evenly distributed. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together beautifully. Remove the skillet from the heat and set aside to cool slightly.
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet:ย Preheat your oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This will prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- Prepare Puff Pastry:ย Lightly flour a clean work surface. Unfold one sheet of puff pastry. If using frozen puff pastry, ensure it has thawed according to package directions. Gently roll out the puff pastry sheet slightly to even it out and make it a bit thinner.
- Cut Puff Pastry:ย Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry sheet into even squares. The size of the squares can be adjusted based on your preference, but approximately 2-inch squares work well for bite-sized appetizers. You should be able to get around 12-16 squares per sheet, depending on size.
- Assemble the Bites:ย Place a spoonful of the cooked beef mixture onto the center of each puff pastry square. Donโt overfill them, as this can make them difficult to close and may cause the filling to spill out during baking.
- Add Cheese:ย Top each mound of beef filling with a generous pinch of shredded cheddar cheese. Make sure the cheese is evenly distributed over the beef for maximum cheesy goodness in every bite.
- Fold and Seal (Optional):ย You can leave the puff pastry squares open-faced for a rustic look, or you can fold them over diagonally to create triangles or bring opposite corners together to form little bundles. If folding, gently pinch the edges to seal them. For a decorative touch, you can also use a fork to crimp the edges. This step is optional but helps to contain the filling and creates a neater presentation.
- Prepare Egg Wash:ย In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk (or water) to create the egg wash.
- Brush with Egg Wash:ย Brush the top of each puff pastry bite with the egg wash. This will give them a beautiful golden-brown color and a lovely shine as they bake.
- Add Optional Toppings (Optional):ย If desired, sprinkle the tops of the egg-washed bites with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything bagel seasoning, or any other toppings you like.
- Bake:ย Arrange the prepared puff pastry bites on the parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is puffed up, golden brown, and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Keep an eye on them towards the end of baking to prevent over-browning.
- Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the Beef and Cheddar Puff Pastry Bites cool slightly on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a serving platter. Serve warm and enjoy! They are best served immediately while the puff pastry is still flaky and the cheese is gooey.
