  1. Prepare the Vanilla:
    • If using a vanilla bean, slice it lengthwise and scrape out the seeds. Combine the seeds and the pod with the milk in a medium saucepan.
    • If using vanilla extract, you can add it later in the process.
  2. Heat the Milk:
    • Place the saucepan over medium heat and slowly bring the milk to a simmer. Stir occasionally to prevent the milk from scorching.
  3. Mix Sugar and Cornstarch:
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, cornstarch, and a pinch of salt. Ensure there are no lumps.
  4. Combine Mixtures:
    • Gradually add the sugar-cornstarch mixture to the simmering milk, whisking constantly to avoid clumps.
  5. Thicken the Kissel:
